When you think about the attempted extermination of a whole society in recent history, you almost inevitably turn to the Holocaust. But, once you scratch the surface, you start to find more and more atrocities which shouldn’t be ignored.
The genocide orchestrated by the Khmer Rouge between 1975 and 1978 is one such event.
First They Killed My Father is an adaptation of Loung Ung’s memoirs during that chilling period, from when she was age five until the regime was toppled four years later.
The film has been adapted and directed by Angelina Jolie, and looks to be one of the hardest hitting films of the year.
First They Killed My Father is out on Netflix September 15th.
