Am I going crazy, or does it feel like we never see Christian Bale anymore? He did that Terrence Malick film Knight of Cups, where he has to suffer the terrible existential dread of beautiful women wanting to sleep with him, and he did that movie with Oscar Isaac that was in cinemas for all of two minutes. Even with an Oscar nomination just last year, it seems he’s taken a step back from big releases and focusing on a lot of smaller stuff, which hasn’t been paying off just yet, but Hostiles looks promising.
In 1892, a legendary Army captain (Bale) reluctantly agrees to escort a Cheyenne chief and his family through dangerous territory.
The film looks quite good; the trailer doesn’t give too much, just the right amount to drag you into this sun-drenched, beautiful looking Western. For a genre that died out long ago, Westerns have turned out particularly well in this modern era of cinema, and it’ll be nice to have another one to add to the list.
Hostiles doesn’t have a UK release date yet, but made it’s US debut at the Telluride film festival this past weekend, while it’ll hit Canada on 11th September.
