Netflix continues to dominate in its documentary filmmaking with the trailer for original short, Ladies First. The documentary short follows Indian born Deepika Kumari. From a girl born in abject poverty, to the worlds number one archer.
Wanting to escape the life of her small village, Deepika went in search of food one day but found Archery. Within four years she went from never having held a bow, to competing internationally. The film charts her backstory, her accomplishments and her journey to competing in Rio de Janeiro. Despite her incredible success, the film demonstrates that still as a women, and a Muslim, she must face prejudice competing. The film also touches on the pressures of potentially being the first Indian women to bring home a gold medal to her country.
The trailer is truly inspiring and showcases a talented sports person who came from nothing. Her journey feels all the more poignaint now as we look to examine women’s struggles in society.
The film is directed by Uraaz Bahl and produced by his partner Shaana Levy-Bahl. What do you think?
Ladies First will launch globally March 8th on Netflix, to celebrate International Women’s Day.
