After the Disney live-action remake of The Jungle Book, another retelling should feel pointless. Yet, with Andy Serkis at the helm of this darker version of the Rudyard Kipling classic, can Mowgli add new life to a completely overdone concept?
Focusing on the journey of lost human boy Mowgli, who is raised in the jungle by Wolves. Alongside his animal companions of Baloo the Bear, (Serkis) and Bagheera the Panther, (Christian Bale) he must find his place in the World. All while escaping the claws of fearsome Tiger Shere Khan, (Benedict Cumberbatch).
Retaining the same basic premise of previous adaptations, the film aims to go deeper into Mowgli’s life. The trailer showcases the film’s grittier tone as well as the striking visuals which could set this film apart. As Serkis is the master of motion-capture performance, (with Gollum and Caesar the Ape under his belt) the animal interpretations are something to look forward to.
For this film Serkis also takes the director role. This is his second feature film after last year’s Breathe.
The film also stars Matthew Rhys, Freida Pinto, Cate Blanchett, Naomie Harris and Tom Hollander. Mowgli marks the first leading role for Rohan Chand as the young man-cub.
The film is scheduled for release October 19th. Are you looking forward to another Jungle Book?
