The Golden Globe Awards have always been full of contrition. From its own genre split (Drama and Comedy,) to its audacious nominations, the award ceremony – seen as a major step towards an Academy Award – has been provocative at best. Last night was no different, and whilst there were deserving winners, there seems to be a lot of upset with favourites Jojo Rabbit and The Irishman leaving with no awards.
For a start, Best Director and Best Picture – Drama awards went to Sam Mendes and his First World War epic 1917, which is shot with long takes. The surprise win saw Mendes win against the likes of The Irishman and Marriage Story in a shocking Netflix upset.
Gloriously Laika triumphed over Disney to win Best Animation for Missing Link. Bong Joon-ho scooped up Best Film in a Foreign Language for the much beloved Parasite. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood also won Best Picture – Musical or Comedy and yet another Screenwriting award for Quentin Tarantino. Brad Pitt also went home with an award for Best Supporting Actor.
Shocking no one, Joaquin Phoenix took home Best Actor – Drama for Joker and he gave one of the weirdest speeches of the night whilst composer Hildur Guðnadóttir won Best Original Score.
Best Original Song went to Elton John for I’m Gonna Love Me Again, featured in Rocketman and lead actor Taron Egerton took away Best Actor – Musical or Comedy. Awkafina took home Best Actress – Musical or Comedy for her stirring performance in The Farewell.
