Well. History has just been made. Parasite has done it folks. It becomes the first International Foreign Film to win Best Picture at the 92nd Academy Awards. What a stellar achievement. Our hearts are shaking right now. Not only does Parasite win the biggest award of the night but it is the film with the most wins, scooping up awards for Best Original Screenplay, Best International Film, and Best Director also. With the audience and the collective Bong Hive across the globe, this is a historic moment for the Academy Awards.
The 92nd Academy Awards were slightly bizarre opening with Janelle Monae singing her hit Come Alive with dancers dressed as Midsommar, Us, and Queen & Slim, a possible homage to all those films snubbed at these awards. In a ceremony which consisted of weird rap round-ups, presenters presenting presenters presenting awards, intro-less performances, the thong song, Cats rearing its ugly head, and Eminem performing, there were very few surprises bar Parasite’s enormous throng of awards.
The rest of the Awards went arguably as you’d expect them, not necessarily how you would want them. Best Actor went for Joaquin Phoenix for Joker giving a passionate and emotional speech. Best Actress went to Renee Zellweger for Judy. Best Supporting Actor went to Brad Pitt who was surprisingly less funny than his usual speeches, instead opting for an emotional turn. Best Supporting Actress went to Laura Dern for Marriage Story.
With the exception of The Irishman (who walked away empty handed again,) every Best Picture nominee left with an award. Ford v Ferrari scooped up two awards for Best Editing and Best Sound Editing. 1917 scooped up another gong for Roger Deakins as well as Best Visual Effects and Best Sound Mixing. Little Women won for Costume Design. Taika Waititi also won an award for Best Adapted Screenplay. As well as Phoenix’s award, Joker composer Hildur Guðnadóttir won Best Original Score – the third ever female composer in Academy history.
Elsewhere Elton John and Bernie Taupin scooped up awards for I’m Gonna Love Me Again from Rocketman – Taupin’s first ever Academy Award.
Matthew A Cherry and his crowdfunded short Hair Love won Best Animated Short whilst Toy Story 4 won Best Animated Feature. American Factory won Best Documentary and Best Short Documentary Subject went to Learning to Skate in a Warzone (If You Are A Girl.) Best Live Action Short went to My Neighbor’s Window. All these categories had female directors or co-directors.
