The Academy Awards have been an iconic part of Hollywood for 95 long years. Since the Golden Age of Hollywood, we have celebrated the supposed best in cinema with these coveted and brilliant awards.
Everything Everywhere All At Once leads the nominations with 11 nods, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for the Daniels, Best Supporting Actress for Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu, Best Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan, and Best Actress for Michelle Yeoh.
Other big swingers include German wartime epic All Quiet on the Western Front and Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin with 9 nominations each, including Best Picture and Best Director.
Paul Mescal gloriously scoops up an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor thanks to his incredible performance in Aftersun. Mascal is joined in the category by Brendon Fraser, Austin Butler, Bill Nighy, and Colin Farrell.
Surprising nominations include Andrea Riseborough, Michelle Williams, and Ana De Armas for Best Actress. Alongside Yeoh and Cate Blanchett. Surprisingly missing out on nominations were Danielle Deadwyler for Till, and Viola Davis for The Woman King.
Best Supporting Actress category feels the most diverse with Kerry Condon, Hong Chau, Jamie Lee Curtis, Angela Bassett, and Stephanie Hsu. Best Support Actor includes Brendon Gleeson, Barry Keoghan, Brian Tyree Henry, Judd Hirsch, and Key Huy Quan
Disney no longer dominates the Best Animated Feature category. They have one nomination for Turning Red but are up against heavyweight contenders including Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio, The Sea Beast, Marcel the Show with Shells On, and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
Best Director once again seems to be an all-male affair with nominations going to The Daniels, Steven Spielberg, Martin McDonagh, Todd Field, and Roben Ostlund. It would’ve been nice to see Charlotte Wells, Sarah Polley, and Gina Prince-Bythewood in this category. Another shocking snub is Jordan Peele’s horror Nope which scooped up no award nominations.
Finally, the Best Picture Nominations are a whole mix-bag of crazy. We’ve got All Quiet on the Western Front, Avatar: The Way of Water, The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Fablemans, Tar, Top Gun: Maverick, Triangle of Sadness, and Women Talking.
